Local Volunteer Sign-Up

We have identified dozens of these facilities in our area. Our goal is to set appointments with all facilities that have veteran residents and then periodically visit each.

This chapter and unit program intends to establish periodical visitation to veterans in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospices in the Orlando metropolitan area.

These veterans tend to be elderly, in poor health, with limited mobility and with a family and circle of friends that have and/or are diminishing over time. Often, they have little or no contact with the community outside of their facility.

Our intent will be to identify these individuals and establish periodic visitations for the simple purpose of engaging them in small talk and cheering them up. In addition, we intend to prepare small gift bags containing a few personal items such as notebooks, pens, stress balls, past DAV magazines, socks, etcetera for delivery with the visit.

We believe there are over 100 of these facilities in the greater Orlando area. We are currently in the process of surveying them to determine if they have veterans (and how many), if the facility will cooperate with our efforts and identify any restrictions to access.

The number of facilities we eventually service will be determined primarily by how many volunteers we can recruit from our general membership and/or the community at large. We will advertise this activity in our monthly newsletter, our Facebook page and on our website.

The content of our gift bags will be determined by the funds we have to allocate, the items we can obtain as donations, and any monetary donations we can generate to support the program. The more volunteers we have, the more funds/gifts/donations we receive, the more elderly veterans we will be able to visit, cheer up, and possibly make a difference in their quality of life.
